If there is any idea that has drastically impacted the design of office furniture it is the concept of ergonomics. Ergonomics centers on the idea that the workplace or work station should be designed in such a manner as to promote a more healthful worker environment and a resultant increase in worker productivity. In the case of office furniture, ergonomics specifically applies to the design of chairs, desks, and other modular office components such as office screens. Originally ergonomic office furniture was built around a strict concept whereby the entire purpose of a furniture piece was structured to better suit the human anatomy. Early ergonomic chairs looked more like a piece of training equipment that a comfortable piece of furniture. Manufacturers realized that as comfortable or effective as these pieces might have been, they were not really practical for day to day office use. Ergonomic chairs were redesigned so that they offered superior body support and also resembled conventional office chairs.

One might think that obviously chairs can easily be designed and built with ergonomics in mind. But what of office desks? How does one make a desk more comfortable? An office desk is just as viable a candidate for ergonomic design as a chair or bed. A great deal of ergonomic design centers on positioning for reach. These design features are created by the use of planned heights and widths. For example, an ergonomic office desk is built with a computer work station and keyboard set at a 45° angle to the writing area and abstraction and writing area may be a desk extension and a 90° angle ending in a small circular table. Ergonomic office desks such as this allow an operator to swivel his or her chair from study of paper reports and files to reference on the computer. Shared information might be placed on the round extension table where a coworker has equal access. Yes features such as rounded corners and edges are part of ergonomics, but the main attribute to ergonomic office furniture design is placement and positioning for quick access with less stressful movement. Excellent examples of this are simple items such as ergonomic mice and coccyx cushions. An inexpensive ergonomic mouse might be just enough of a stress relief tool so as to avoid carpal tunnel syndrome.

Even the most conventionally appearing office furniture can be filled with ergonomic design elements. And if not built originally with ergonomics in mind a few simple adjustments can turn any office or workspace into an efficient ergonomic area.

Let us begin with the traditional rectangular office desk. How can we make this standard 30 inch high office desk more comfortable to work behind? As simple an item as a modular desk extension can allow us to set our computer monitor at an exact height level. If this is inconvenient place that monitor at a 45° angle on the corner of our desk, to create much the same effect. Ergonomic keyboards and seat cushions also go a long way towards lessening fatigue. Rectangular office desks are inherently not ergonomic. As such, we must add to them small accoutrements and make them more user-friendly.

One might ask how can furniture such as a glass office desk be ergonomic? Quite obviously the most noticeable feature of glass office desks is their transparency. Being able to see the location of a briefcase or folders placed on the floor or in a module adjoining our desk is very easy to do when looking through a glass desktop. This reduces extraneous stretching and leaning over chair arms.

As stated above an L shaped office desk is inherently ergonomic. It can be made more so, simply by the use of planned placement of needed items. If you are constantly using a printer and rising from your chair to retrieve copies, then placement of that printer within arm’s length on your L shaped desk’s extension will obviously reduce movement. However one should always remember that forced movement such as rising from your station to walk over to a shared printer allows an irreplaceable moment of stretching and circulatory improvement.

When choosing furniture for any business, thought should be given to ergonomics. Doctors, dentists, and others who routinely ask their clients to wait should make a point of purchasing ergonomic furniture for the reception rooms. Reception chairs need not be the familiar hard plastic joined together rows of incredibly uncomfortable one piece chairs. Clever ergonomically designed chairs and reception sofas are available with subtle, but still present, lumbar support.

An interesting sidebar is that home office furniture is an excellent candidate for ergonomic improvement. Even if your home office desk is just a TV stand in front of the couch, you can take a few steps to improve your posture and long-term comfort. Remember computer monitor screens must always be set at eye height or slightly below. Your back must not be allowed to slump forward. This results in tremendous strain on your rib cartilage. Because when working one is apt to stay in the same place for several hours you must make certain that arms and shoulders are lifted.

The concept of ergonomics is inherently built into certain levels of high quality executive office furniture. Boardroom furniture is a prime example. You’ll notice that the quality of chairs use around these conference room meeting tables is always extremely high. In fact office chairs in conference rooms are usually of higher quality than those in an executive office suite.

One final area where you may not have noticed the occurrence of ergonomic design is in use is in restaurants. Ever notice that your favorite dining spot has chairs that are so comfortable as to entice you to stay and drink another glass of wine or cup of coffee or dessert? Bistro furniture has long been built with customer comfort in mind. The curved back of a padded booth always has sufficient lumbar support. Even the simplest bistro chairs including the original bistro chair created by Michael Thonet in the late 1800s was designed for a restful dining experience.

Ergonomic design is more than the process of building a chair that lets your feet sits flat on the ground. A better premise is to think of ergonomics as a sort of Feng Shui for your body.
